New Launcher Version 3.0 Instructions
Thanks for purchasing the latest 3.0 version of our compressed air rocket launcher! With most parts pre-assembeled, you'll be launching sooner than ever!
NOTE:
This launcher is to be used under adult supervision only.
Never aim launcher at people or animals.
Here are some easy to follow step by step instructions:
First, open the box and check the contents:
You should see a welcome letter and PDF templates for paper rockets. Feel free to photocopy these and make as many as you like. If you need an original PDF, it is available free from our “templates” tab of our website. Look for more official NASA and ULA templates there too.
Check to make sure you have all the parts shown below:
1. Slide the two base pieces together as shown:
2. Turn it over and push down firmly to seat the two parts together:
3. Slide the black plastic pointer over the aluminum tank and set it into the two notches in the quick exhaust valve as shown:
4. Next, slide the aluminum tank into the top slot of the base. The plastic pointer should seat against the end of the launcher base. The pointer is intentionally tight on the QEV. You can slide the tank with the pointer into the red base to seat it fully.
5. Install the “U” bolt as shown, around the tank and through the two holes in the plastic base:
6. Next, install the washers and wing nuts onto the U bolt threads. Loosen to adjust launch angle and retighten:
7. The pointer should line up with the launch angle on the side of the base.
8. Thread the grey PVC launch tube into the top of the quick exhaust valve. Don't overtighten! This connection is not under pressure and does not need to be too tight. This allows for easy removal and storage in the base when not in use.
9. Next, firmly push the orange tube into the blue end of the right angle fitting. It installs about 3/8” (10mm) into the fitting:
10. Insert the other end of the orange tube into the chrome ring at the end of the slide valve, push firmly; it also installs about 3/8” (10mm) into the valve:
11. This is what the completed launcher should look like:
12. Optional: Next thread the string (could be a variety of colors) through the red plastic slide valve lock and then tie onto the orange hose near the slide valve.
13. Slide the blue sleeve on the slide valve to the Pressurize position then clip the slide valve lock into place to prevent accidental launches.
14. To assemble the rocket parts into a CARB (Compressed Air Rocket - Bounce recovery) follow the instructions found here.
Launcher Operation Instructions:
To operate the launcher, remove the black Schrader valve cap and connect a manual tire pump, air compressor or portable battery powered compressor.
Load the rocket over the launch tube.
Slide the blue part of the slide valve in the direction of the arrow that shows “Pressurize” (away from the pump, towards the orange tube and launcher).
Pump to desired pressure – check the gauge on your pump. Lower pressures (10-30 PSI) for large indoor spaces such as a gym. Higher pressures up to ≈120 PSI (above which the overpressure valve will open) outdoors. If you need consistent pressure at every launch, consider purchasing our Adjustable Pressure Regulator with Pressure Gauge. It attaches in between the bike pump and Shrader Valve side of the slide valve.
Remove the slide valve lock.
Do a countdown, and quickly slide the blue part of the slide valve away from the launcher. You will hear a hiss as the air escapes the orange tube, triggering the QEV to open in about 1 millisecond, venting the charge of air from the tank and launching the rocket!
Note: When using with children, it is best to locate the launcher on a table, with the launch tube angled down range, so the rocket launches over the length of the table. The table prevents people from getting too close or leaning over the launcher. See our FAQ page here for more setup options and tips for working with larger groups.
Launcher Storage & Transport Instructions:
To store or transport, make sure pressure tank is discharged by pulling on the ring at the end of the over pressure valve to vent any residual pressure. Unscrew and slide the launch tube into the larger notch in the base, coil the orange tube around the base and then secure with Velcro strap. The smaller notch in the base is for a 3/8” launch tube which works with standard stomp rockets. A length of 3/8” pipe 10" or 12" long and a ½ NPT male to 3/8 NPT female adapter is required to use that size launch tube.
